Pioneers find going tough this time in Hobbs

HOBBS, N.M. – In a rematch of their season-opener, the Wayland Baptist softball team took on the University of the Southwest (N.M.) here Tuesday afternoon. After playing the Mustangs close twice last month, this time the Pioneers found the going tougher as Wayland fell, 9-1. The game ended after 4½ innings on the 8-run rule.

"We allowed too many baserunners and gave away runs. Our bats were pretty silent," WBU coach Enrique Villa said.

Wayland (2-8) gave up five runs in the first inning, and the Mustangs (11-15) scored another in the second, two more in the third and their final run in the fourth.

The Pioneers were able to avoid the shutout when Mikayla Carrillo and Madison Martinez provided Wayland's two hits in the game with back-to-back singles leading off the top of the fourth. The runners moved up when Reagan Davis flied out to right then Carrillo scored on Ashley Bauler's sacrifice fly to center.

Alexis Lopez pitched all four innings for the Pioneers, allowing seven hits with six walks, two strikeouts and three hit-batsmen. Five USW pitchers combined to strike out seven and walk two.

In their season-openers, Wayland lost to USW in Hobbs, 3-1 and 4-3.

The Pioneers have three games left in their schedule, the first two a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Borger against Frank Phillips College. WBU plays its debut season finale March 28 at Midland College.
