BORGER – Wayland Baptist dropped a pair of games to Frank Phillips College here Saturday afternoon, falling 13-3 in five innings and 10-2 in six.
In the opener, the Pioneers (2-10) and Lady Plainsmen (8-9) were scoreless after the first inning, but FPC scored five runs over the next two innings before Wayland got on the board in the top of the fourth. The Lady Plainsmen then put up eight in the bottom of the fourth. The Pioneers came up with two in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to prevent the game ending early on the eight-run mercy rule.
Wayland's three hits and three runs came courtesy of Aaleah Rodriguez, Reagan Davis and Sammy Briones. Mikayla Carrillo was credited with a pair of RBIs. Briones pitched the first 3 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Ashley Bauler and Alexis Lopez pitched one/third of an inning each.
Wayland played error-free in the field.
In game 2, after another scoreless first inning, FPC scored four in the second, three in the fourth and two in the fifth, while Wayland plated single runs in the third and fifth. That made it 9-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth when the Lady Plainsmen pushed across the game-ending run with two outs.
Providing one hit apiece for the Pioneers, who suffered a dozen strikeouts, were Rodriguez, Carrillo, Madison Martinez, Davis and Clarissa Rejino. Rodriguez's hit was a double, and Carrillo logged the lone RBI, and both players scored.
Rejino went the distance on the bump, walking none and striking out two. FPC finished with 13 hits, including a home run and five doubles. Wayland committed three errors.
WBU is slated to end the season Tuesday with a single game at Midland College. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
(Wayland is playing an exhibition schedule in 2023 before competing as a Sooner Athletic Conference team with a countable schedule in 2024).
