MIDLAND – Wayland Baptist's first-ever softball season came to a close here Tuesday as the Pioneers fell to Midland College, 10-0.
Midland College (23-6) ended a scoreless game by plating nine runs in the third inning then put up the game's final run in the fourth. Wayland – which ended with one hit, a single by Aaleah Rodriguez – couldn't get on the board and the game ended after 4½ innings on the eight-run mercy rule.
It marked the first time all season the Pioneers were shut out.
Three Pioneer pitchers – Clarissa Rejino, Sammy Briones and Ashley Bauler – allowed eight hits (including two home runs) and seven walks while striking out one.
MC pitcher Zoey De Baca went the distance, striking out five and walking one while giving up the lone single to Rodriguez.
The Pioneers ended their all-road games exhibition season – a precursor to joining the Sooner Athletic Conference next season – with a 2-11 record. Wayland won its third and fourth games of the season, defeating Clarendon College, 10-2 and 12-2.
Midland College was coming off a series sweep of Clarendon over the weekend, winning those games, 35-8, 35-2, 17-6 and 22-2. Two earlier games between Wayland and Midland College were cancelled.
"I'm proud of our kids for their dedication to WBU and WBU softball," Wayland coach Enrique Villa. "This group of kids did an exceptional job laying the foundation for what Wayland softball will be. I am proud of their efforts and I am proud of them."
