Marshall – The Pioneer Women's Wrestling team traveled north to Marshall, Missouri to compete in the Missouri Valley Open, one of the biggest women's wrestling meets in the country. Two Pioneers earned Top 10 finishes in their weight class –
Malarie Dominguez (8
th in 103 lbs.) and
Leilani Sanchez (8
th in 207 lbs.)
A senior from Hereford, Texas, Dominguez put up an outstanding effort in the MVO, taking home an 8
th place finish individually. In the 7
th place match, Dominguez fell short against Alexis Miller (Unattached OK) by decision, 4-0.
A sophomore from El Paso, Texas, Sanchez also took home an 8
th place finish individually. In her 7
th place match, Sanchez fell short against Maquoia Bernabe (University of the Cumberlands) by decision, 6-2. Sanchez is currently tied for 5
th in the NAIA Individual rankings in the 207 lb. class.
The Missouri Valley Open is one of the largest women's wrestling tournaments in the country and features over 750 competitors from over 50 schools. There were teams competing from all levels including the NAIA, NCAA Division 1, and JUCO.
The Pioneer Women's Wrestling team will return to the mat after Thanksgiving break when they travel to Kansas City, Missouri to compete in the Avila University Duals. The Dual is scheduled to take place on Friday, December 13
th.
