Plainview, Texas – Nestor, Sigala, and Brice combine for 53 of the 84 Flying Queen on their way to a dominant home Sooner Athletic Conference win against Texas Wesleyan University (10-13, 6-11 SAC).
After giving up an opening bucket 3-pointer, RV Wayland Baptist (18-5, 13-4 SAC) was able to rattle off a 6-0 run with Nestor scoring all six points to take a 6-3 lead. Texas Wesleyan was able to grab the lead back and extend it to 14-6 with just under five minutes remaining in the period. The Queens answered the Ram run with an 8-0 run on their own that included two 3-pointers, one by Sigala who went 4-6 from 3-point range in the first half. The Rams would take a 20-19 lead into the second quarter after hitting a 3-pointer with just under twenty seconds remaining.
The second quarter is where the Flying Queens took over this game after outscoring the Rams 22-9. It began by a quick 8-1 burst by the Queens started by a Nestor putback layup and capped off by Sigala draining back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Wayland Baptist lead to 27-21 just under three minutes into the frame. A minute later, Nestor received the post entrance pass from Sigala and finished through contact for the and-one layup to extend their lead to 32-23. The Queens got their final bucket of the half after
Taylor Houston attacked the bucket for the layup, but the Rams answered with a jumper at the buzzer to make it a 41-29 Flying Queen lead at the half.
The Queens second half scoring began with Houston cleaning up the offensive boards and dropping a nice pass off the Nestor for the easy bucket which caused Texas Wesleyan to immediately call timeout. With just over five minutes left in the third quarter, Sigala was able to get into the paint for a bucket to push the Flying Queen lead up to 19 points. The Queens took a 64-38 lead into the final quarter after Brice pushed up the floor in transition to get to the hoop for a layup, capping off her 7-point quarter.
The Queens opened the final quarter on an 11-4 run that started with another Nestor layup through contact and finished with a Brice layup. Brice scored 7 of the 11 points during the Queens opening 11-4 run. With just over five minutes remaining in regulation,
Bobbie Fouquet drained a 3-pointer from the logo to give the Flying Queens their largest lead of the game at 37 points. The Flying Queens went on to defeat Texas Wesleyan 84-55 to hold second place in the Sooner Athletic Conference standings only trailing 16
th ranked John Brown.
Megan Nestor finished with 21 points, 20 rebounds, shot 8-12 from the floor, and blocked 3 shots.
Emily Sigala scored 16 points, added 9 assists, and went 4-9 from 3-point range.
Linda Brice contributed 16 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Taylor Houston added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and shot 5-7 from the floor.
The RV Flying Queens are set for the final regular season home game at the Hutcherson Center as they take on the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) (16-7, 12-5 SAC). Tip is set for Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM.
