McPherson, Kan. - In a commanding performance, the 12
th ranked Flying Queens showcased their prowess in a Sooner Athletic Conference faceoff, overpowering the Central Christian (Kan.) Tigers with a stunning 108-48 victory.
Wayland Baptist couldn't have asked for a better start in today's game, scoring the game's first 12 points with
Linda Brice and
Kaitlyn Jerden combining for ten of those points. The Queens extended their lead to 24-6 after a three-pointer from
Bobbie Fouquet followed by another bucket from Brice.
The Queens closed the opening quarter in dominant fashion as
Megan Nestor cleaned up the offensive boards for a put-back layup to give the Queens a 28-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Queens began the second quarter with another huge scoring run – this time going on a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 41-7. The Tigers answered back with a three-pointer to make it 41-10, but then the Queens used another massive 15-0 scoring run to extend their lead to 46 points. The Queens converted 5 of 6 free throw attempts down the stretch to take a 61-19 lead into the halftime break.
Central Christian knocked down a few shots to begin the second half, but the Queens extended their lead back to 42 points after
Emily Sigala knocked down her second three-pointer of the night.
Peyton North capped off another dominant quarter for the Queens with a late three-pointer to give WBU an 83-41 lead heading into the fourth.
The Queens pushed their lead to a staggering 93-45 after Jerden knocked down another three-pointer with just over five minutes left in the game.
Jadyn Trusler later put the Queens over the century mark with an open three-pointer to make it 102-45.
Brooklyn Hurtado gave the Queens their largest lead of the game with a tough bucket inside the paint to make it 106-45 with just over two minutes left.
The Queens went on to win this one by a huge margin of 108-48.
Nestor finished with a team high 23 points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and a block. Brice added 19 points on 9-12 shooting from the floor, with five rebounds, and an astounding six steals. Hurtado scored 16 points on a perfect 4-4 from the floor, while bringing in five rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.

Jason Cooper was especially pleased with the team's recovery from a previous tough outing, praising the team's performance. "It was a great bounce back game for our girls. We shot the ball really well. It was good to see Linda get some shots to go in after a tough night Thursday, and she had a really great game defensively with 6 steals. We did a really good job early in the game of attacking them inside with Megan and Kaitlyn both having solid quarters. Brooklyn had another solid performance coming off the bench with 16," Coach Cooper stated.
The team's next challenge will be at home against Texas Wesleyan University on January 23
rd, as they hope to extend their impressive season record of 16-2 (13-2 in conference) at the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
