PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist volleyball celebrated Senior Night with a dominant sweep over Langston University on Friday night at the Hutcherson Center. The Pioneers cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-11, 25-14, 25-20), improving to 12-9 overall and 11-6 in SAC play, while the visiting Lions fell to 9-17 (5-12 SAC).
Before the match began, the Pioneers recognized their four senior:
Jordan Schlageter,
Carlee Heidebrecht,
Fade Ogunbade, and
Emme Wilson.
The Pioneers controlled the match from start to finish, showing balance on offense and discipline on defense. Ogunbade led the charge at the net, posting nine kills on an efficient .412 hitting percentage to go along with three aces and three block assists for a team-high 13.5 points.
Deniz Yileri matched Ogunbade's energy with nine kills and 11 digs, continuing her steady all-around play. Heidebrecht also contributed eight kills and four block assists, while
Martyna Lewinska directed the attack with 26 assists and chipped in four digs and a block assist.
Wayland set the tone early, hitting .300 in the opening set while holding Langston to a .069 mark. The Pioneers' front line caused problems for the Lions all night, recording 14 total block assists and limiting Langston to a .019 hitting percentage overall.
Defensively,
Rachel Russell anchored the back row with a team-high 14 digs, while
Averi Penner added 12 digs and three aces from the service line.
After a comfortable first two sets, the Pioneers fended off a late Langston push in the third to close out the sweep in front of their home crowd.
Wayland Baptist finished with 33 kills on .159 hitting, 31 assists, and 11 service aces—a complete team effort that underscored the Pioneers' depth and momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
The Pioneers return to action on Saturday, October 25
th, when they take on the Tigers of Central Christian College at the Hutcherson Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 PM.
