Des Moines, Iowa - The Wayland Baptist Women's Wrestling team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the Grand View Open and had a great meet.
Tess Barnett placed 5th in the Gold 124 lb division. Barnett went 3-2 with two technical falls and one fall.
Mercy Adekuoroye won the Gold 131 lb division, going 4-0 in the meet. Mercy beat the #2 and #9 ranked girls in the country in her route to the finals. In the first place match, Mercy won in a 6-3 decision over Xochitl Mota-Pettis, who is the defending U.S. Open champion.
Jordan Suarez placed 3rd in the Gold 138 lb division. Suarez won six matches and lost only one in receiving the bronze. Along the way, Jordan defeated the #4 ranked NAIA wrestler and the #3 ranked NCAA wrestler in the 138 lb class. She won the 3rd place match with a 14-8 decision.
Leilani Sanchez finished 3rd in the Gold 207 lb division. Sanchez went 4-1 with all four of her victories coming by fall.
Faith Wooley earned a 5th place finish in the Gold 207 lb division. Wooley twice won by fall and once by decision as she finished 3-2.
Alissa Cowling placed 3rd in the Silver 110 lb division. In compiling a 4-1 record, all of Cowling's victories came by fall.Â
The wrestlers return to the mat Wednesday, February 5, when they host Tarleton State and Jarvis Christian in the WBU Duals.
