PLAINVIEW, TX -- Wayland Baptist put together a strong all-around performance Saturday afternoon, sweeping Oklahoma City University, 25-20, 25-23, 25-23, inside the Hutcherson Center. With the win, the Pioneers moved to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in Sooner Athletic Conference play.
Wayland's balanced attack led the way, as
Carlee Heidebrecht and
Deniz Yileri each tallied nine kills to pace the offense. Heidebrecht hit an efficient .259 while also picking up 15 digs, notching a double-digit point total with 10 overall. Yileri added nine digs and a team-high 11 points, showing her impact on both ends of the court.
The Pioneers also benefited from key contributions across the lineup.
Fade Ogunbade posted five kills, three blocks, and 6.5 points, while
Emma Scott added four blocks to anchor the defense at the net.
Martyna Lewinska directed the offense with 23 assists and chipped in four digs, while
Aubrie Sierra and
Jordan Schlageter steadied the back row with a combined 16 digs.
After pulling away late in the first set, Wayland had to grind out the final two frames. Set two featured 11 ties and six lead changes, but the Pioneers held firm, sealing the 25-23 win. The third set followed a similar script, with Wayland closing the door in the clutch to complete the sweep.
Wayland Baptist will look to carry its momentum into next week as the Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, September 16th, at home against Oklahoma Panhandle State University.
