Wayland Volleyball Sweeps Langston for Eighth Conference Victory

PLAINVIEW, Texas – The Wayland Baptist University volleyball team returned to the win column Friday with a dominant 3-0 sweep of Langston University inside the Hutcherson Center. The Pioneers controlled the match from start to finish, winning 25-16, 25-12, and 25-15 to improve to 12-8 overall and 8-4 in Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) play.

Wayland delivered an efficient offensive performance, finishing with 35 kills and a .280 hitting percentage while holding Langston to just 22 kills and a .038 hitting percentage. The Pioneers also recorded eight service aces and six total blocks in the victory.

The Pioneers established control early in the opening set, collecting 11 kills and holding Langston to seven. Wayland maintained its momentum in the second set, limiting the Lions to just 12 points while recording another 11 kills. The Pioneers saved their most efficient offensive performance for the third set, hitting an impressive .429 with 13 kills and just one attacking error to complete the sweep.

Olivia Ley and Taisiia Kalchenko led the Wayland offense with eight kills apiece. Ley added two solo blocks and finished with a team-high 10 points, while Kalchenko recorded a .261 hitting percentage and one solo block.

Brooklyn Bundy provided an impressive contribution off the bench, recording four kills on six attempts without an error for a .667 hitting percentage. Emma Scott also contributed four kills while hitting .500, and Sevval Aslan added three kills on four attempts for a team-best .750 hitting percentage.

Wayland received contributions throughout its lineup, with 10 different players recording at least one kill. Klaudia Brzeczkowska added four kills, while Taylor Mendenhall and Ilgin Cacaron each contributed two.

The Pioneers were equally effective from the service line, with Lilou Henry-Souquet-Bressand and Deniz Yileri recording three aces apiece. Milena Alliot-Maslankiewicz and Aubrie Sierra each added one ace to round out Wayland's eight service aces.

Defensively, Alliot-Maslankiewicz led the Pioneers with 10 digs, followed by Rachel Russell with five and Ana Zink with four. Martyna Lewinska led Wayland with 11 assists, while Chloe Gray and Zink each contributed nine assists as the Pioneers utilized multiple setters throughout the match.

Following the victory, Assistant Coach Dentton Hudspeth praised the team's performance and the contributions from players throughout the roster.

"It was good to get back on the winning side of things. Really happy to see some of our bench players get in and be effective as well." Hudspeth said.

Langston was led offensively by Ayanna Moore, who finished with six kills, while Ia'Neiah Spears added five. The Lions fell to 3-12 overall and 2-11 in conference play.

Wayland Baptist will return to action on Saturday, October 10, at 1 p.m., when the Pioneers host Central Christian College (Kan.) inside the Hutcherson Center in Plainview, Texas. The Pioneers will look to build on Friday's victory as they continue Sooner Athletic Conference play.
