PLAINVIEW --- Wayland Baptist baseball put together an impressive doubleheader performance on Saturday afternoon in Plainview, rallying for a dramatic 14–12 victory in Game One before cruising to a dominant 13–2 win in Game Two over Adams State.
Game One: Wayland Baptist 14, Adams State 12
The Pioneers showed resilience and toughness in the opener, overcoming an early deficit to secure a thrilling comeback win. Adams State jumped out to a 5–0 lead through two innings, highlighted by a three-run homer in the first. Wayland answered in the second when
Daniel Blickhan launched a solo home run, and the offense continued to chip away in the third as
Cesar Ibarra and
Adonis Bernal helped bring in another run.
After falling behind 7–2 in the fifth, Wayland's bats came alive in a pivotal eight-run inning. Bernal delivered a clutch two-run single, while
Sinclair Pimentel followed with a two-RBI base hit to ignite the rally. Aggressive baserunning and Adams State miscues allowed the Pioneers to keep pressure on, eventually taking a 10–7 lead.
Adams State responded in the sixth and seventh innings to regain the advantage, but Wayland refused to back down. In the bottom of the sixth, Pimentel drove in another run, while Blickhan,
Raphael Beltre, and
Ben Kasparie added key contributions as Wayland plated four runs to regain control at 14–9. Despite a late push from Adams State, the Pioneers closed out the win.
Pimentel led the offense with three hits and four RBIs, while Ibarra went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases. Blickhan homered and reached base four times. On the mound,
Wellington Vargas earned the win in relief, providing stability after the early innings.
Game Two: Wayland Baptist 13, Adams State 2 (7 inning run-rule)
Wayland carried its momentum into the nightcap, delivering a complete performance on both sides of the ball. The Pioneers struck first in the opening inning when Pimentel crushed a two-run home run to give Wayland an early advantage.
After Adams State cut the lead to 2–1, Wayland exploded for seven runs in the third inning to seize full control of the game. The inning featured RBI singles from Pimentel and Blickhan, a two-run double by Kasparie, a run-scoring triple from Ibarra, and a solo homer from Bernal. The offensive outburst pushed the lead to 9–1 and shifted all momentum to the home side.
Wayland added four more runs in the sixth, highlighted by Ibarra's two-run double and Bernal's two-run single, extending the lead to 13–2. The Pioneers finished with 14 hits, showcasing a balanced and relentless lineup.
On the mound,
Branin Seibert delivered a strong start, going five innings while allowing just two runs—only one earned—while striking out five.
Tyler Thompson followed with two scoreless innings to close out the win.
Bernal paced the offense with two hits and three RBIs, while Pimentel added another three RBIs and his second home run of the day. Ibarra finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Kasparie drove in two more.
