PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist University Athletics took its commitment to service into the Plainview community as Pioneer student-athletes and coaches participated in the NCCAA's #KingChasing Day.
#KingChasing Day is part of the National Christian College Athletic Association's #KingChasing Program, which encourages member institutions to make an impact for Christ on their campuses and in their surrounding communities through Christian service projects. The program emphasizes the NCCAA's mission of keeping Christ at the center of intercollegiate athletics.
For this year's service project, Wayland Athletics spread throughout Plainview with teams divided among three locations — Kidsville, Downtown Plainview and Broadway Park — with the shared goal of cleaning up the community and helping make Plainview a more beautiful place.
At Kidsville, members of the Wayland Baseball team and Flying Queens Women's Basketball team worked together to pick up trash and clean the surrounding area.
A second group headed to Downtown Plainview, where Men's Basketball, Men's Soccer, and Women's Wrestling joined forces. Along with picking up trash throughout the downtown area, the Pioneers removed plants that had died during the year and replaced them with new plants, helping refresh and improve the appearance of the community.
At Broadway Park, student-athletes from Esports, Men's Wrestling, Beach Volleyball and Indoor Volleyball spent their time cleaning the park and collecting trash.
The day provided Wayland student-athletes with an opportunity to step away from competition and work alongside teammates and fellow Pioneer programs for a common purpose. More importantly, the service projects allowed WBU Athletics to give back to the Plainview community that continues to support Pioneer athletics throughout the year.
The NCCAA uses its #KingChasing Institution Point System to recognize schools for their involvement in service and other Christ-centered initiatives. Institutions earning 105 points are recognized as NCCAA #KingChasing Institutions, with the top three point-earning institutions becoming finalists for #KingChasing Institution of the Year.
For Wayland Baptist Athletics, the day served as another reminder that being a Pioneer extends beyond success on the field, court or course. It also means serving others, investing in the community and using athletics as an opportunity to make a positive impact.
