Wayland Baptist University Athletics

Green, an undersized scorer, found ways to win

Considered one of the finest backcourt players ever to wear a Wayland Pioneer uniform, Leroy Green originally enrolled at the university in September 1949. Previously an All-State performer at Memphis High School, Green played for the Pioneers from 1949-51, returning after a three-year stint as a United States Coast Guard training officer to compete from 1954-56.
Green was a member of Wayland teams that finished third in the Amateur Athletic Union State Tournament in 1950-51 and won the NAIA District 8 Championship in 1954-55. Green never played on a losing team at Wayland. The Pioneers were 19-16 in 1949-50, 19-18 in 1950-51, 22-6 in 1954-44 and 17-8 in 1955-56.
Green’s talent and leadership qualities were evident even during his military service when he was selected captain of a Coast Guard training station team that won the 12th Naval District and Northern California Military championships in 1953. He was named to the All-Military West Coast All-Star Team in 1952 and 1953 and played in the Western Hemisphere Military All-Star Tournament in 1953.
A prolific scorer despite being only 5’8”, Green tallied 1,142 career points and ranked 21st on the Pioneer Career Scoring List at the time of his induction into the Hall of Honor. He was captain of the 1950-51 and 1955-56 teams and was named Wayland’s Male Athlete of the Year in 1951 and 1956.
Green earned a bachelor of Science degree in Education in June 1956, and later a Master’s degree at the University of California at Long Beach. He subsequently taught for three years at Garden Grove, California before moving into an administrative position. Following three yrs as principal in Fountain Valley, California, Green spent 28 years as a principal in the Centralia School District in Buna Park, California. His professional accomplishments include Who’ Who – Young Men of America in 1960, Educator of the Year in 1964, Outstanding Principal in Southern California in 1964, and a term as president of the Orange County Association of Administrators.
