Mike Stephenson played collegiate football at McMurry University before earning his degree at Wayland Baptist. A native of New Deal, Texas, he was a running back on the state semi-finalist New Deal High team.
 
A former coach at both New Deal and Plainview, Stephenson and his wife, Jennifer, a teacher for the Plainview Independent School District, have three daughters – Gwen, Lizzy, and Tatum – and one son, Luke.
