Mike Scott comes to Wayland as the assistant men’s basketball coach for the Pioneers with an impressive resume after playing at the NCAA Division I level and overseas.
Scott is a high school product of Franklin Learning Center in Philadelphia where he graduated in 2007. In his senior season, Scott was the MVP of the Public League, the All-City Classic all-star game and the All-Star Labor Classic. He holds the record for most assists in a game at Franklin Learning Center with 17.
After graduation, Scott attended TCU his freshman year where he played in 29 games, averaging 3.3 points and 2.4 assists per game. He transferred to the College of Eastern Utah for his sophomore season, helping lead the Golden Eagles to a 25-7 record that included a 14-game win streak. The point guard averaged 8.5 points and 4.6 assists per game, earning him honorable mention all-conference honors.
Scott went on to play his final two collegiate seasons at Fairleigh Dickinson University, an NCAA Division I school in Teaneck, N.J., and a member of the Northeast Conference. Prior to his senior season, Scott was named to the pre-season all-conference team. He averaged 13.7 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game over his two-year career for the Knights.
After his collegiate career, Scott played in a professional league in Dortmund, Germany. After the 2011 season ended, Scott headed back to the United States to become an assistant coach at Midland College for the spring semester. Scott returned to his alma mater for the 2012-13 school year to help coach at Fairleigh Dickinson before joining the Pioneer staff in the fall of 2013.
Head basketball coach Matt Garnett is excited to have Scott joining his staff.
“Mike is an extremely loyal person that has a great mind for the game of basketball,” Garnett said. “His basketball resume is very impressive, and he has a great passion to help our student-athletes to grow both as players and, more importantly, as people. He is a man of faith and will make a positive impact on our university both on and off the court.”
Scott graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson with a degree in media communications in 2011 and currently is pursuing a master’s degree in the same field of study.
