Julie Garcia helped the WBU dance team to the NAIA championship at the American Dance/Drill team Collegiate Championships on Saturday at the University of North Texas in Denton. A sophomore from Clovis, N.M., Julie is captain of the team.

After several high places, it is Wayland’s first-ever national championship in dance or cheer.

Wayland competed Saturday with a six-member team as two dancers were unable to participate due to other obligations. WBU received a score of 276 out of a possible 300 for its 2-minute, 11-second routine.

The dancers now have their sights set on the National Dance Alliance National Championships in Daytona, Fla., on April 9-14. Wayland’s cheer team also will compete in Daytona.
