Twin sisters Tamyra (left) and Tarkyia Mensah won national championships on Saturday at the USAW University Nationals in Oklahoma City, giving Wayland its first-ever champions at that event. Tarkyia took first place in the 121-pound class and Tamyra in 152s, each winning all four of their matches. Tamyra recorded three pins and a tech fall, while Tarkyia tallied one win by decision and three tech falls. In the finals, Tarkyia won by a 10-0 tech fall while Tamyra registered a first-period pin. Coach Aaron Meister: "We're very happy to have two national champions. They were both second last year and continued to work hard and improve their wrestling skills, and the end product was two national championships. They're both leaders in our program. We're really hoping Tarkyia will pick up a sponsorship with Titan Mercury like Tamyra has. Both have worked hard. It's exciting and very rewarding as a coach to see all their hard work pay off."
