Rokas, a 6-foot-8 senior forward from Palanga, Lithuania, helped the ninth-ranked Pioneers close out their first-ever Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season championship season with road wins over Texas Wesleyan and Southwestern Assemblies of God University. Including an exhibition game at Texas-Rio Grande Valley, Rokas led Wayland in assists for the week with eight and is second on the team for the season with 59.
“I thought Rokas really played really well last week,” coach Ty Harrelson said. “SAGU and Texas Wesleyan both played zone (defenses), and Rokas is such a great passer he was able to find guys for open shots.”
Harrelson said Rokas, a two-year starter, has won 26 of the team’s 30 game-opening jump balls this season. “I think he’s only lost six in his career. That means we get an extra possession each game, which is very important considering all of the close games we’ve been in.
“He’s also improved his defense down the stretch, which has been key to our success this semester.
Harrelson added that Rokas, who is a team captain, is “unselfish” and “plays his role well.
“Rokas doesn’t have to score, but he does a lot of the small things that make us as successful as we are.”
