Mitchell led the Pioneer football team to a season-opening 35-13 win over University of St. Mary (Kan.). In his first action in a year after being injured in the 2018 season-opener, Mitchell completed 23-of-32 passes (72 percent) for 326 yards and four touchdowns with no turnovers. The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder from Crowell threw TD passes of 21, 29, 12 and 33 yards, including three scores to Brayln Kirby. The four TD tosses tied Mitchell's own school record accomplished four times previously.
 
The Pioneers travel to Odessa this week to take on Texas-Permian Basin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
