Baseball Team Wins 2

Shawnee, Okla.---The same two teams played two totally different baseball games on Thursday afternoon, but the end result was the same with the Wayland Baptist Pioneers coming out on top of the Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader against Oklahoma Baptist, 10-0 and 7-6.

WBU's Marcus Limon pitched a five-inning complete game shutout and the Pioneers scored a run in every inning of the opener to win their first conference game of the season.

Limon, who improved to 3-0, threw just 65 pitches in the game, allowing two hits and striking out four. The Pioneer defense played flawlessly behind him and the offense produced its ten runs on 13 hits.

Franky Busani went 3-for-4 in the contest with a RBI. Pedro Gomez was 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI, and Keith Martin produced two hits, including a solo shot in the third and a three-run bomb in the fourth.

In the nightcap, the Pioneers and Bison combined to score 13 runs on 16 hits, but the defenses committed a total of nine errors.

Todd Weldon won his fifth decision in the game. The junior from Carlsbad struck out ten in 5-1/3 innings of work, surrendering three unearned runs on five hits.

Wayland jumped out to the early lead with a run in the first when Brett Cook walked, advanced to second on a throwing error and scored on Busani's double to right.

OBU scored its first run of the day in the second on two hits and two Pioneer errors.

The Bison went up 4-1 in the third on a three-run homer by 2008 SAC Player of the Year Josh Collazo. Cook tied it at four in the top of the fourth with a three-run triple that went past the diving leftfielder and rolled to the wall.

The Pioneers regained the lead with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Martin knocked in one of the runs in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and Brett Sheppard doubled to deep right center to plate the second. Michael Prell scored Wayland's final run on Eddie Allen's RBI single to right.

Christopher McNeil struck out one in relief of Weldon. Trevor Stringer pitched the final inning and a third to record his first save of the season.

OBU outhit the Pioneers 9 to 7, but committed five costly errors. The two teams wind up the series with a single game Friday afternoon beginning at 3 p.m.
