AMARILLO, Texas --- The Wayland Baptist men's wrestling team had three tough outings on Saturday at The Courts of Amarillo. The Pioneers fell to two opponents ranked in the NAIA Top 25, 45-4 to #16 Oklahoma City University and 40-6 to #25 York College. They also dropped a 44-6 decision to Bacone College.
Two WBU upperclassmen won decisions against Bacone. Sophomore Richard Leal of Pampa defeated Chase Martinez in the 125-pound class, 8-6. Cesar Alvarez, a junior from Hereford, followed one bout later with an 8-5 win in the 141-pound division.
Leal also picked up the only points against Oklahoma City with a 12-0 major decision. He later earned six points with a forfeit win against York College.
Freshman Shane Wilkinson had a close match in the 133-pound class against OCU. The Arlington High School graduate lost a narrow 9-8 decision.
The Pioneers were wrestling even more short-handed than usual. Freshman Marc Backus of Amarillo, who has been the most successful WBU wrestler so far this season, was forced to sit out the meet with a torso injury. That gave head coach Johnny Cobb just six wrestlers to compete in the ten weight classifications.
Wayland has one more tournament before the Christmas break. The men travel to Wichita, Kansas on Sunday, Dec. 12 to compete at Newman University
