Hobbs, NM --- The baseball team at Wayland Baptist suffered a doubleheader loss at the hands of the University of the Southwest here Tuesday afternoon. The Pioneers dropped game one, 8-6, and fell in the nightcap, 10-8.
USW jumped out early in the opener, scoring seven runs in the first two innings off Wayland starter Calvin Lewis. The Pioneers made a game of it late with two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, but it wasn't enough.
Pedro Gomez had two hits in the game, both doubles, and two RBI. Brian Embery was 2-for-4 and Marcus Limon also had a double.
Trevor Stringer pitched the middle three innings of the game, giving up one run on one hit and walking two. JT Huckabay pitched the sixth, allowing one hit and walking one.
In the second game, Mustang pitchers held the Pioneers hitless until Calvin Bass' one out single in the fifth. WBU trailed 7-1 after six but scored seven runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Kevin Hennessey's three-run homer, to take an 8-7 lead.
Relief pitcher Marcus Limon got a ground ball out to start the bottom of the seventh, but then a base hit, a walk and a walk-off three-run home run put an end to the Pioneers' hopes for a split.
Embery and Bass both had a couple of hits in the contest. Bass and Gomez each doubled and Scott Keane had two RBI.
The Pioneers (18-11) return to Wilder Field this weekend for a three-game conference series against Oklahoma Baptist beginning with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m.
