Embery's Grand Slam Sparks Pioneers

Wayland Baptist's Brian Embery sparked an eight-run first inning with a grand slam homer and the Pioneers went on to defeat Eastern New Mexico University 12-1 in seven innings at Wilder Field on Tuesday afternoon before over 600 elementary school students.

Scott Keane, who was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, also went deep for the Pioneers. WBU improved to 25-14 on the season.

Eddie Allen led off the contest with a walk. Pedro Gomez got a base hit through the right side of the infield and Kevin Hennessey was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out for Embery who hit his 11th long ball of the spring.

The Pioneers got the other four runs in the inning on a wild pitch, RBI singles off the bats of Keane and Michael Prell, and a RBI ground out by Allen.

Kevin Hennessey doubled to lead off the second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and crossed the plate on Jose Santiago's ground out to short.

WBU put up a two-spot in the third on three straight singles from Keane, Allen and Prell, and a sacrifice fly from Gomez.

Keane hit his sixth homer of the year to lead off the fifth, and that ended up being the final Pioneer run of the day.

The Greyhounds scored their lone run in the second when Gomez, the WBU right fielder, slipped and fell on a deep fly ball hit by Ethan Wagner, allowing Wagner to reach third base. ENMU's leading hitter later crossed home plate on Padan Vendrely's RBI single to right center.

Calvin Lewis picked up his second win of the season for the Pioneers. The junior southpaw allowed the one run on five hits and struck out two. He did not walk a batter.

Doug McIntyre (1-5) took the loss for ENMU, which fell to 21-22.

The Pioneers continue with their break from Sooner Athletic Conference play with a four-game series this weekend at the University of Houston-Victoria. Live stats for all four games will be available.
