Baseball Team Back In Action

The Pioneer baseball team avenged an earlier loss to West Texas A&M University with a 7-3 win at Wilder Field on Tuesday evening. Six Pioneer pitchers held the Buffaloes to three runs, and six different WBU batters knocked in a run.

Calvin Lewis started on the mound for the Pioneers. The junior southpaw threw the first four innings, giving up one run on four hits and striking out two. Justin Eatherly, who was credited with the win, gave up one hit in the fifth, as did Brett Swett in the sixth.

The Buffaloes got two runs on three hits in the seventh off Trevor Stringer, who recorded two strikeouts. Marcus Limon gave up one hit in the eighth, and Todd Weldon came in to get the final three outs of the contest on eight pitches.

The first run of the game came on a double steal by Eddie Allen and Kevin Hennessey in the bottom of the first. Josh Lucas had the only long ball of the game for Wayland, a solo home run in the fourth. Hennessey had two hits, including a double, and a RBI. Allen, Brian Embery, and Pedro Gomez also had two hits and a run batted in each. Jose Santiago had the only other extra base hit, a run-scoring double in the third.

Wayland improves to 26-14 on the season, while the Buffaloes fall to 20-19. Coach Brad Bass's team returns to Sooner Athletic Conference play this weekend with a key three-game series at home against Southern Nazarene University. WBU is currently third in the conference standings with a 14-7 mark, while the Crimson Storm is one-and-a-half games back at 12-8. Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at noon. First pitch for Saturday's single game is set for 1 p.m.
