Baseball Drops Two at USW

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hobbs, NM --- After pounding out 20 runs on 20 hits at home on Friday, the Wayland bats went strangely silent on Saturday leading to a doubleheader loss to the University of the Southwest. The Pioneers fell 8-4 in the opener and 10-3 in the nightcap.

WBU had just three hits in the first game against the Mustangs. After a one-out walk in the top of the first, Miguel Pagan hit his third home run of the season to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.

Brian Embery hit a single to center in the fourth and Aldo Mendez had a base hit to right center for the other two Wayland hits.

The Pioneers did have a chance to come back in the seventh. Trailing 8-3, the bases were loaded with no outs when Scott Keane brought home Nick Shadle on a fly ball to right that was dropped. A fielder's choice knocked out the next runner at home, and then two fly balls ended the game.

Freshman Mikey Nabarette was the starter for WBU. He went four innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits. He walked four batters and recorded three strikeouts.

USW jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the nightcap, taking advantage of four hits, five hit batters, an error and a walk.

Kevin Hennessey entered the game in the third and pitched well in relief for WBU, throwing three shutout innings.

The Pioneers scored two in the fifth on a two-run homer by Mendez, and got another in the sixth on an error, back-to-back base hits by Gabe Sandersius and Ben Christian, and a bases loaded walk by Calvin Bass.

Wayland is on the road for their next six games. Next up on Feb. 4-6, the Pioneers will compete with fellow Sooner Athletic Conference members Lubbock Christian and Oklahoma City in a battle with Red River Athletic Conference (RRAC) schools Northwood, LSU-Shreveport and Texas Wesleyan in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. They will then travel to Odessa, Texas on Feb. 11-13 for a tournament hosted by the University of Texas-Permian Basin.
