SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist volleyball team wrapped up its fifth straight 20-win season one game short of an appearance in the Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament Championship match. The Pioneers fell in straight sets to top-seed Oklahoma Baptist, 25-16, 25-19, 25-17, in Friday night's semi-final round.
Tatiana Gonzalez completed her career with 12 kills and ten digs. She was the only Pioneer to reach double figures in kills as the Wayland women hit just .099 in the match.
Four other Pioneers joined Gonzalez in double digit digs, however. Kate Trejos and Kimberli Harger had 12 each, and Alissa Hodgson and Natasha Giacomazzi dug up 11 attacks each.
After playing one of their best matches of the season in the afternoon's opening round, WBU was not able to keep up with an extremely talented Lady Bison team, according to Jim Giacomazzi, Wayland's head coach.
"I'm obviously disappointed. Defensively we didn't play poorly, and we had some players that gave it everything they had, but tonight OBU showed that they are the best team in the conference. "
The Lady Bison, ranked #20 in the latest NAIA Coaches Poll, improved to 30-10 on the season and advance to the SAC title match against Lubbock Christian University on Saturday. WBU concludes its 2011 season with a record of 20-15.
