OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. --- In their first dual of the season, the Pioneers fell to #6 Oklahoma City University, 45-6. Redshirt freshman Donovan Vanderbilt picked up the lone win for the Wayland men on the evening.
Vanderbilt's 9-7 decision came in overtime against Matt Kennedy in the 133 pound weight class.
Two Pioneers took their matches to the very end before dropping close decisions. Freshman Victor Thomas had a 3-2 lead after a last minute escape, but was edged out 4-3 on a takedown with seven seconds left at 141 pounds. At 174 pounds another freshman, Jose Alvarez, was beaten 11-7 in the last minute on a three-point near fall and resulting takedown.
Wayland was forced to give up major points due to forfeits at 165 and 184 pounds.
The WBU men are in action three more times within the next week. They make their home debut on Friday against Central Baptist College (Ark.) at 7 p.m. in Hutcherson Center. On Saturday, the Pioneers face York College, Bacone College and Central Baptist in duals at The Court in Amarillo. Those matches begin at 10 a.m.
Finally, the Stars come calling for a rematch next Wednesday, Dec. 7 in a dual at 7 p.m. at the Hutch.
