Men's Wrestling Rhane Jeffress

Wrestlers Get Some Payback

Seven of the nine Wayland Baptist men who competed on Wednesday at Hutcherson Center were victorious in their matches against Oklahoma City University.

Senior Richard Leal was one of four Pioneers to defeat a Star by major decision.  Leal, who is from Pampa, took down Alvie Killingsworth in the 125-pound class, 11-5.

Freshman Victor Thomas of Bryan, Texas, won 12-2 at 141 pounds over Sterling Wright.  Jose Alvarez, a 174-pound freshman from Hereford, dominated Tyson Campbell by a score of 15-2, and sophomore Manuel Rocha from San Antonio, took his 197-pound match 11-3 against Teanu Rickard.

Pioneer heavyweight Markese Christian was the lone Pioneer to pick up a win by fall.  The freshman from Houston pinned Derek Locust 16 seconds into the second period.

Two other freshmen, Donovan Vanderbilt and Bernie Gonzalez, won their bouts by decision.  Vanderbilt, who is from Cypress, Texas, took his 133-pound match 12-5, and Gonzalez, a 157-pounder from El Paso, captured a 9-6 decision.

"OCU may have competed with JV-type wrestlers, but so did we," said Pioneer Coach Johnny Cobb, whose team was beaten last week by a much more experienced Stars team in Oklahoma City.  "The majority of our kids are freshman too, so no matter how you look at tonight, it equals a good win over Oklahoma City and an outstanding night for our program."
