Baseball Splits Pair in Permian Basin

MIDLAND, Texas --- The Wayland Baptist baseball team split their first two games of the University of Texas-Permian Basin Classic on Saturday, beating Eastern New Mexico 11-1 in the opener before falling to Colorado School of Mines, 6-5.

Marcus Limon tied his own school record with 14 strikeouts against ENMU. Playing in Odessa at UTBP's Roden Field, Limon limited the Greyhounds to the one run onfour hits in seven innings. The senior (2-0)walked four and hit one.

Newcomer Derrick Sampel, a transfer from Frank Phillips College, pitched two hitless innings in relief of Limon.

The Pioneers, who had 18 hits in the game, scored one in the first, three in the second, and one in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead, and then broke it open with three runs in both the eighth and ninth.

Senior shortstop Eddie Allen had four hits in the game. Aldo Mendez, a senior centerfielder, had four RBI on three hits, including two doubles. Junior catcher Oscar Rivera also had three hits. The only other extra base hit, another double, came off the bat of senior outfielder Gabe Sandersius.

WBU coach Brad Bass's squad spent the time between the first and second games making the trip back east to Midland's Christensen Stadium where they took on theSchool of the Mines.

The Pioneers were down 6-1 before scoring four runs in the bottom of the eighth. Miguel Pagan and Nick Noll started the inning off with back-to-back singles. Brian Embery laid down a sacrifice bunt and a wild throw by the first baseman allowed both Pagan and Noll to score and Embery to get to third.

Nic Shadle followed with a RBI single. A walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Scott Keane who singled in Shadle. A double play and a ground out ended the WBU rally.

The Pioneers had 11 hits in the game, butstruck out 10 times, leaving 11 on base,and hit into four double plays

Kevin Burbank (2-1) got the start on the mound for Wayland. The junior transfer from Grand Canyon University threw seven innings, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits and striking out eight. Jobi Sanchez and Anthony Trevino pitched one inning each in relief.

WBU, which falls to 4-5 on the season,returns to Christensen Stadium on Sunday for games against UTPB and New Mexico Highlands.
