Box Score 2 Seventh-ranked Oklahoma City University used a seventh inning rally in game one and then exploded for five runs in the first inning of the nightcap to sweep a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader from Wayland, 5-3 and 12-2.
The Stars got on the board first in the opener with a run in the top of the first. The Pioneers answered with a run of their own on Aldo Mendez's lead-off homer in the bottom of the inning.
WBU senior pitcher Marcus Limon held the visitors to just one hit in the next two innings, but OCU put another run on the board in the fourth on a base hit, a fielder's choice, and a double in the right field corner.
Nic Shadle got a one-out single in the bottom of the fourth and tied the score on Ben Christian's RBI double. Mendez gave the Pioneers a 3-2 advantage when he singled home Christian, and Limon took care of things in the fifth and sixth, holding the Stars hitless and striking out three.
OCU's Mark Purser led off the seventh with a rocket off the back dugout wall in left field to tie it at three. After a strikeout, speedy Ruben Sosa beat out a ground ball and advanced to second on an errant throw. Another error put runners at first and third and WBU coach Brad Bass made a pitching change. Senior southpaw Gabe Sandersius picked off the runner at first, but then surrendered back-to-back doubles that gave the Stars the win.
Limon had eight strikeouts in his 6-1/3 innings of work. He gave up four earned runs on seven hits and walked three.
In the second game of the day, Oklahoma City scored five runs on five hits in the first inning, got a single run in the third, and then belted out six more in the sixth to take the run-rule victory.
Eddie Allen went 2-for-3 in the game for Wayland. The senior shortstop scored a run in the first on Kevin Hennessey's RBI single. The other Pioneer run came in the second when Brian Embery walked and eventually scored on a base hit off the bat of Allen.
The Stars outhit WBU 15-5 in the contest. Allen Townsend went the distance for his first win of the season, while Kevin Burbank took the loss.
The two teams close out the series on Saturday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
