Box Score Six Wayland Baptist pitchers combined to give up 19 hits and 12 walks and the Pioneer defense committed three errors behind them in a 20-9 loss to Eastern New Mexico University in front of 450 elementary school children at Wilder Field on Tuesday afternoon.
An obviously tired group of Pioneers were back on the field for the noon start today, a little over 12 hours after playing a nine-inning game against arch-rival LCU last evening.
Despite the back-to-back games, the high-powered WBU hitters got 14 hits off three ENMU pitchers, but only two went for extra bases, a double by Aldo Mendez and a three-run homer from Kevin Hennessey. The Pioneers left 11 men on base, seven of which were in scoring position with less than two outs.
Eddie Allen went 4-for-6 in the game, while Miguel Pagan and Mendez had three hits each.
The visitors had a 9-0 lead before an obviously tired Wayland team finally managed to put a run on the board in the fifth. The Pioneers plated four in the inning on three singles and four walks. Three of the bases on balls came with the bases loaded.
Hennessey's long ball in the sixth closed the gap to 10-7, but the Greyhounds scored at least one run in each of the final three innings, including a seven-run ninth.
Every batter in the ENMU lineup had at least one hit, lead by Blake Thomsen and Mitch Wolfe with four each. Only four of the Greyhound hits were for extra bases, but all four were long balls, two of which came off the bat of Wolfe.
The Pioneers (20-23) return to Sooner Athletic Conference action this weekend on the road in Alva, Okla. where they will face Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Friday's doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m., as will Saturday's single game. Live stats and audio will be available for all three games at www.nwosu.edu/broadcast.
