Box Score 2 SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist baseball team dropped a doubleheader to #7 Oklahoma Baptist, 12-4 and 8-7, on Friday at Bison Field.
WBU senior centerfielder Aldo Mendez had a pair of home runs and Ben Christian, the Pioneer's junior rightfielder, had three hits including a double and a homer on the day.
Mendez's three-run shot to left in the first inning of game one put the Pioneers up 3-0. The Bison came back to grab a 6-3 lead after three.
WBU narrowed the gap to 6-4 in the top of the fifth on Christian's two-out solo blast to right center, but OBU plated six in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by Chris Lemus' grand slam, to break the game open.
Gabe Sandersius started and took the loss for the Pioneers. The senior fell to 5-6 on the season after allowing eight earned runs on ten hits in four innings of work. He recorded seven strikeouts.
Wayland scored in each of the first four innings of the nightcap to take a 7-1 lead. Mendez picked up three of the RBI on a double in the first and a two-run long ball in the fourth. Christian also knocked in a run with a double, and designated hitter Nick Noll singled in each of his first three at bats.
The Bison got back in the game with a five-run fourth, punctuated by the second grand slam of the day, this time off the bat of catcher Mitchell Prophet. OBU took the lead in the fifth on a two-run double by first baseman Bam Davis.
Daniel Marti, who entered the contest with one out in the fourth, gave up just two hits in three-and-two-thirds innings for the Bison. He retired WBU in order in both the sixth and seventh to earn the win, his fourth of the season. The Bison improved to 38-11 overall and solidified the second seed in next week's Sooner Athletic Conference Tournament with a 22-7 league mark.
Kevin Burbank started on the mound for the Pioneers. The junior lefty allowed eight runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three in 4-1/3. Jobi Sanchez, a junior, gave up just one hit in his 1-2/3 innings of work in relief.
WBU falls to seventh place in the SAC standings with a 12-17 record, and is 26-27 overall. The two teams wrap up the regular season with a single game on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
