Pioneers Shut Down in OK

Box Score

SHAWNEE, Okla. --- The Wayland Baptist baseball team suffered its first shutout of the season on Saturday in a 5-0 loss to #7 Oklahoma Baptist. OBU senior pitchers Richie Mirowski and Blake Gallacher combined to hold the Pioneers to just three hits and struck out 12 batters in the nine-inning contest.

Senior Eddie Allen had two of those hits, both singles in his first two at bats. Junior second baseman Brian Embery had the other, a base hit through the right side of the infield in the seventh. Embery's hit was sandwiched between two walks, but the Pioneers, which trailed 4-0 at that point, left the bases loaded.

JT Huckabay suffered his first loss of the season for Wayland. After getting off to a shaky start -- the senior gave up three runs on two hits and a couple of bases on balls in the first - Huckabay settled down, allowing just three hits in his final five innings of work. Derrick Sampel pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

OBU, which raised its record to 39-11 overall and 23-7 in the conference, will be the number two seed in the postseason tournament. Wayland (26-28, 12-18) will be either the sixth or seventh seed, depending on the outcome of the doubleheader between Mid-America Christian and USAO on Saturday.

The SAC Tournament will be co-hosted by Lubbock Christian and Wayland beginning Wednesday, May 4. Pairings and other tournament details will be released early next week.
