LINDSBORG, Kan. --- The Pioneer men's wrestling team picked up two dual wins on Wednesday night, including a 28-18 upset over #13 Concordia University (Neb.). The WBU men also defeated host Bethany College, 31-8.
Five Pioneers went 2-0 on the evening. Albert Tapia won a 6-3 decision at 133 pounds against Bethany, and then pinned Concordia's 125-pounder at the midway through the second period.
Ryan Sauer, a freshman competing in his first duals of the season, won the 165-pound match by major decision, 8-0, over Bethany, and then pinned Concordia's 165-pounder at the 5:50 mark of the dual.
Jose Alvarez improved to 17-4 with a 10-0 major decision victory against Bethany and a 9-2 win over Concordia in the 174-pound weight class.
Wayland's two big men, Manuel Rocha at 197 and Markese Christian at 285, both went undefeated. Rocha pinned his opponent from Bethany early in the second and then took a 7-2 decision over Concordia. Christian pulled out a 4-1 decision over the host team's wrestler and pinned Concordia's heavyweight 6:49 into the match.
Senior Richard Leal won his only bout of the night, an 8-2 decision over the 125-pound Bethany wrestler. Victor Thomas, Chris Hart and Bernie Gonzales picked up a win each. Thomas won an 8-1 major decision at 141 pounds against Bethany, Hart picked up a 19-2 technical fall at 149 pounds against Bethany, and the 157-pound Gonzales took a 14-5 major decision from the Concordia wrestler.
Next up for the Pioneer men is the Texas Shootout, which they will host on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Hutcherson Center.
