Queens coach
Tory Bryant went away pleased with everything from his team's performance to the 500 fans in attendance.
“For the first game I thought our energy level was good, our intensity level was consistent and I thought we had a nice crowd here,” Bryant asid.
The Queens assumed a commanding 43-19 lead in the first half then continued to build on it in the second 20 minutes before coming away with the convincing 28-point victory.
Eleven players scored for Wayland.
Angeleigh Davis added nine points,
Jordan Scott-Benson eight,
Laura Castillo seven and
Stephanie Afunugo six. Rounding out the scoring for the Queens were
Rochelle Norris,
Olivia Patterson and
LaTericka Anderson with two each and
Ashton Pedigo with one.
“The kids played with good effort, and defensively our intensity was consistently good for all 40 minutes,” Bryant said. “At times on offense we were impatient. We want to play a tempo that forces (the opponent) to take quick shots and shots they're not comfortable taking, but we don't want to force ourselves into doing that same thing. We want to have patience and good execution on offense.”
Wayland outrebounded the Aggies 41-31, with Mooney leading the Queens with seven boards. The Queens committed 15 turnovers compared to 28 for OPSU.
“We did a good job on the glass,” Bryant said, underlining Wayland's 23 offensive rebounds. “And we did a nice job at the free-throw line (12-of-18).”
Whitley Coca was the only Aggie in double figures with 15 points.
The Queens return to The Hutch for a 5 p.m. game Friday against Texas Wesleyan.
