With one of their strongest statistical offensive and defensive performances in several seasons, the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens defeated Northern New Mexico College on Monday night in Hutcherson Center, 86-39.

“Overall it was a good team effort,” Wayland coach Tory Bryant said. “We were able to get a lot of kids minutes tonight, and for such a young group I think that's valuable. The more our kids get to play together the more comfortable they become with one another, and ultimately that helps to continue to develop our team chemistry.”

Angeleigh Davis scored 15 points, LaTericka Anderson 14 and Christie Mooney 13 to lead the Queens (3-2). Laura Castillo also reached double figures with 10 points. All 11 Queens scored.

The 47-point win was the largest point differential for the Queens since they beat  Huston-Tillotson by 48 points, 96-48, to open the 2010-11 season. The 39 points was Wayland's best statistical defensive performance since limiting Dallas Christian to 19 in a 117-19 victory in the second game of the 2009-10 season. Further, it was Wayland's most points in a game since beating Northern New Mexico, 97-55, in the third game last season.

Wayland held a slim 9-8 lead before its offense erupted, scoring the next 13 straight points as part of a 20-1 run. The Queens were up 39-18 at the break.

“We came out slow, which playing three games in the course of four days, with some travel involved, might have had something to do with that,” Bryant said.

CeCe Williams nailed a 3-pointer early in the second half before the Queens hit a bit of a scoring slump, going some seven minutes without another point until Olivia Patterson popped another 3. Wayland's tough defense prevented NNMC from making much of a run during that time as the Eagles never got closer than 16 points.

After that, Wayland got off another strong push, outscoring the visitors from Espanola, N.M., 25-1, to assume a 67-27 lead. Taking advantage of several steals and easy lay-ups, the Queens were able to push the margin to 50 points before a late 3-pointer by NNMC got the margin back under the half-century mark.

“We're playing solid defensively, but our offense still has quite a ways to go,” Bryant said. “Northern struggled tonight, although I was proud that we held them to 18 in one half and 21 in the other.”

The Queens shot 56 percent from the field (35-of-63), including 6-of-12 (50 percent) from 3-point range, while holding the Eagles to 27 percent (12-of-44), and just 4-of-17 (24 percent) from long range. Wayland dominated NNMC on the boards, 45-21, with Anderson's seven boards leading the Queens. WBU ended with 22 turnovers compared to 28 for the visitors. The Queens had 18 steals, led by Mooney's four.

Wayland next participates in its second tournament in as many weekends at the Our Lady of the Lake Classic in San Antonio. The Queens take on a second-year program, Houston-St. Thomas, at 4 p.m. Friday before meeting the host team at 6 p.m. Saturday. OLLU is ranked 24th in the NAIA.
