ATCHISON, Kan. – The Wayland Baptist men's wrestling team wrapped up its final event of the fall semester in style, going 3-of-4 at the Benedictine College Raven Duals here on Saturday.
The Pioneers kicked off the event in dominating fashion, taking the 48-0 victory over Truett McConnell College, followed by a 33-9 win over Concordia University. Host school Benedictine bested Wayland 23-15, but the Pioneers bounced back in their final matchup of the day, winning 24-21 over York College.

Johnny Cobb said his team stepped up and put in some impressive performances.
“We really came out smoking,” he said. “The kids stepped up and did a great job. Even against the team we barely lost to, it was down to the wire. The match was even closer than what the score indicated.

Miguel Tovar both went undefeated and were 4-0. Also,
Marcus Romo stepped in for us at the 133-lb. weight class when one of our guys didn't make weight. He was 2-1 and did an excellent job.”
Cobb said he and his athletes will take the next two weeks off before returning to campus on Dec. 30.
“We had some great competition this weekend and we're glad to finish up strong before the Christmas break,” he said. “We're anxious for this time off…the guys are battle weary and need time to heal up over the holidays.
“We're looking forward to the second half of our season and got some great experience already this year. When we get back, we're excited to have our No. 2-ranked athlete Chino (
Jose Alvarez) back from injury. We want to finish out this season strong and are looking forward to what we can do.”
The Pioneers will be back in action Jan. 6 as they travel to Albuquerque to take on New Mexico Highlands University and Embry-Riddle University.
