Drovers Roundup Pioneers

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHICKASHA, Okla. --- The Pioneer baseball team dropped a pair of conference games at Science and Arts of Oklahoma on Friday afternoon, losing 13-5 in the opener and falling 6-4 in the nightcap.

Wayland's offense picked up 16 hits in the doubleheader and the defense did not commit an error, but the pitching staff struggled, allowing 19 earned runs on 24 hits, and issuing ten bases on balls.

Calvin Bass and Josh Carroll swung the hot bats for the Pioneers.  Bass went 5-for-7 in the two games, while Carroll, WBU's junior third baseman, went 4-6 with two homers and five runs batted in.

The Pioneers grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the second inning of the first game after Josh Chinni led the inning off with a solo home run, his eighth long ball of the season.  After Carroll and Bass hit consecutive singles, Oscar Rivera brought home Carroll with base knock.

Carroll gave Wayland a 3-1 lead in the third when he singled home Johnny Hendrixson, who led off the inning with a base hit and then stole second.

The Drovers took control of the contest with ten unanswered runs in the bottom of the third and fourth innings.

Rivera's sacrifice fly in the fifth and Carroll's solo homer in the top of the seventh represented the final two Pioneer runs.

Freshman Cooper Reinbold took the loss in relief of starter Ryan Downs, who lasted just one-third of an inning.   Jobi Sanchez was the final of five Pioneer pitchers in the game.  The senior from Plainview threw the final inning-and-a-third, allowing just one baserunner.

In the second game, Mikey Nabarrette drove in Chinni with a fielder's choice in the second inning to give the Pioneers a brief 1-0 lead.

Carroll's three-run blast in the top of the sixth tied the score at four.  WBU starting pitcher Tom Bailey struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the sixth, but the sophomore from Australia walked the next hitter on four pitches and then gave up a RBI  double to the gap in left center.

Freshman southpaw Arthur Roblez came in to relieve Bailey and surrendered another RBI double to give the Drovers the 6-4 lead.

The Pioneers went in order in the top of the seventh to fall to 10-17 overall and 1-10 in SAC play.  USAO improved to 14-13 overall and 5-7 in league action.

The two teams play the final game of the series on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Bill Smith Ballpark.
