Pitchers Tom Bailey and Cooper Reinbold each picked up a complete game win in the Pioneers' 3-1 and 8-5 doubleheader sweep over Mid-America Christian on Friday at Wilder Field.
A sophomore right-hander, Bailey allowed just one run on six hits in the opener, picking up his fourth victory of the season. He struck out eight, including all three batters he faced in the seventh, and did not issue a walk.
Josh Chinni recorded the first RBI of the series with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. Calvin Bass, who doubled with one out in the inning, advanced to third on Brian Allen's single, and then scored easily on Chinni's fly ball to centerfield.
Bailey did have to work himself out of a couple of jams in the contest, including a bases-loaded/no out situation in the top of the second.
Oscar Rivera drove in two of the three WBU runs. The senior catcher drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the first that put the Pioneers up 2-0, and then brought home Wayland's final run with a base hit in the third.
MACU made it a two-run game in the fifth with a run on a hit, two sacrifice bunts and a RBI groundout, but Bailey shut the door in the final two innings, allowing only one base runner when he hit the lead-off batter in the sixth.
In the nightcap, Reinbold gave up four earned runs on seven hits. He walked one and struck out three, and made several key defensive plays to help his own cause.
After retiring the side in order in the top of the first, the freshman right-hander from Amarillo gave up five hits, including three consecutive doubles in the four-run second. Reinbold came back strong, however, allowing just two base runners over the next four innings. The Evangels' last run, scored in the top of the seventh, was the result of a dropped fly ball.
The Pioneers scored their first two runs of the second game much like they did in the opener. Rivera worked a bases load walk in the bottom of the second that scored Chinni, and then Josh Carroll crossed home plate on shortstop Chris Buitron's sacrifice fly.
Wayland closed the gap to 4-3 on Johnny Hendrixson's sac fly that scored Allen, and then took the lead for good in the fourth when Carroll roped a three-run double down the left field line.
An unearned run in the fifth and Hendrixson's second RBI of the game on a one-out double in the sixth gave Reinbold all of the cushion he would need.
The Pioneers (12-19, 3-11) and Evangels (3-23,0-14) will finish up the three-game series on Saturday afternoon with a nine-inning game that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
