Momentum Fails to Carry Over for Pioneers

Box Score

The Wayland Baptist baseball team failed to carry over the momentum from Friday's Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep, dropping a 7-4 decision to Mid-America Christian on a perfect spring afternoon at Wilder Field.

MACU, which were in the midst of a 20-game losing streak heading into Saturday afternoon's contest, jumped out to a 6-1 lead over WBU.  The Evangels scored a single run in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth off Pioneer starter Kevin Burbank

The visitors had 11 hits in the contest, including three doubles, a triple and a home run.

Josh Chinni led off both the second and the eighth innings with long balls.  Josh Carroll also went deep for Wayland with a solo shot following Chinni's in the eighth.  Johnny Hendrixson, who roped two doubles, was the only other Pioneer to record an extra base hit.

WBU hit into four double plays in the game.  Two came on hard hit line outs to end the first and third innings.  The final DP came in the bottom of the ninth after Chris Buitron and Dilon Chancellor began the inning with back-to-back singles.

Burbank took the loss, his second of the season.  The senior southpaw allowed the six runs on six hits.  He did not walk a batter and struck one.  Freshman Paxton Bartley threw 3-1/3 innings in relief, allowing one unearned run on four hits.  The Coronado High graduate walked three and struck out four.

Jobi Sanchez closed out the game for WBU, allowing one base hit.

The Pioneers (12-20, 3-12) are scheduled to play six games this week at Wilder Field.  They host Lindenwood University on Tuesday and Wednesday with single games at 6 p.m. on both nights.   Arizona Christian comes to Plainview for a four-game series beginning on Friday.
