Greyhounds Take a Bite Out of Pioneers

Box Score

PORTALES, N.M. --- Eastern New Mexico scored all its runs in the middle five innings to defeat Wayland Baptist 12-4 in nonconference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Greyhound Field.

Neither team produced a run in the first two innings, but ENMU put up a three spot in the third and scored two more in the fourth to go up 5-0.

The Pioneers made it 5-4 in the top of the fifth.  Shortstop Chris Buitron led off the inning with an infield single.  WBU catcher Oscar Rivera followed with a base hit, and Colton Palmer was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Johnny Hendrixson knocked in all three base runners with a double down the left field line, and after a walk and an error, Brandon Barcalow brought home Hendrixson with a single.

ENMU broke the game open with two more runs in the fifth and sixth, and then put up a three-spot again in the seventh.

Wayland had seven hits in the game, but just one in the final three innings, a single by Calvin Bass.  Josh Chini had the only other extra base knock, a double to left field in the third.

WBU Coach Brad Bass used five pitchers in the contest.  Junior transfer Robert Carrion threw the first four innings and got the loss, his first of the season.  Cooper Reinbold was the only Pioneer pitcher that did not allow a base runner.    The freshman retired the side in order in the eighth.

The Pioneers are now 9-14 on the season.  They did pick up a win on Tuesday when it was learned that Lewis & Clark State used an ineligible player in a game against Wayland back on Feb. 3 in Arizona.

WBU returns to Sooner Athletic Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Wilder Field against Northwestern Oklahoma State University.  Friday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4 pm.
