Pioneers Leave Too Many On Base

Box Score

Hoping to gain some energy from their 400+ rowdy young fans from three local elementary schools, the Wayland Baptist baseball team instead fell flat, dropping a 10-4 decision to Eastern New Mexico on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers left 12 men on base and were outhit 21-9 in the loss, their 11th in the past 12 games.  All six WBU pitchers used in the game gave up at least one run.

Outfielder Johnny Hendrixson and shortstop Bernie Rosario recorded two hits each and Calvin Bass had two RBI.  Three of the Wayland hits went for extra bases with Colton Palmer, Josh Carroll and Ben Christian each getting credit for a double.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the second inning, but the Greyhounds put up a crooked number in the third (2) and scored single runs in the fourth, seventh and eighth to grab a 7-2 advantage.

Bass's two-run single in the bottom of the eighth closed the gap to 7-4, but the visitors put up three more runs in their final at bat to secure the victory and improve their record to 12-22 on the season.

ENMU got three hits each from Brooke Brooks, Daniel Binz and Derek Crenshaw.  Crenshaw went 3-for-3 in the contest and hit his first home run of the year to lead off the seventh.    Jaspret Shergill picked up his first win, holding the Pioneers scoreless for 3-1/3 innings in relief of starter Ryan Boydstun.

Freshman reliever Paxton Bartley (3-5) was charged with the loss for the Pioneers.

WBU returns to conference action this weekend with a three-game series at St. Gregory's University.  The Cavaliers, who took two-out-of-three last weekend at Lubbock Christian, are enjoying their best season since joining the Sooner Athletic Conference.  They are currently in fourth place in the SAC standings with an 11-7 record, and are 17-17 overall.  The Pioneers are 4-15 in league play and 13-30 overall.
