Box Score After dropping a three-game series at No. 7 Oklahoma Baptist over the weekend, Lubbock Christian came into Wilder Field on Tuesday evening loaded for bear. The No. 14 Chaps got all their frustrations worked out in a big way, exploding for 13 runs in the first three innings of a 16-5 victory over the Pioneers of Wayland Baptist.
The Pioneers finally found some life in the home half of the third. Senior catcher Oscar Rivera led off the inning with the first WBU hit of the night. Freshman Dilon Chancellor followed with another single, and Colton Palmer walked to load the bases.
Calvin Bass drove in courtesy runner Ben Christian with a ground ball to first, and then Bernie Rosario plated Chancellor with a sacrifice fly.
WBU put another run on the board in the fourth when Brian Allen drew a walk, advanced to second on a base hit by Palmer, and eventually came around to score on a Chaparral throwing error.
Freshman pitcher Paxton Bartley entered the game for Wayland in the fifth and held the Chaps to a scoreless inning for the first time. Bartley allowed two hits in the sixth, but he and Bass combined to make an impressive defensive play to get out of the jam unscathed.
Two more Pioneers crossed the plate in the bottom of the inning. Rivera, Bass, and Josh Chinni each got a hit, and Bass and Rosario were credited with the RBIs.
LCU, which improved to 27-15 and 15-8, had 23 hits in the game including three doubles and three home runs.
The loss eliminates the Pioneers (13-34, 4-19) from any chance at post-season play. WBU will wrap up its home season with a three-game conference series on Thursday and Friday against Southern Nazarene University. Thursday's doubleheader will begin at 4 p.m., while first pitch of Friday's single game will be thrown at 1 p.m.
