Box Score LUBBOCK, Texas --- Playing for nothing but pride, the Wayland Baptist Pioneer baseball team scored in each of the first six innings and then held on to upset the archrival Chaparrals of Lubbock Christian, 11-9, at Hays Field on Monday evening.
WBU got the game's first run on Josh Chini's RBI double in the top of the first, but LCU responded with four in the bottom of the inning off Pioneer starter Ryan Downs.
Downs, starting his first game in over a month, shut the Chaps down in the second and third while his offense came back to grab an 8-4 lead.
The Pioneers scored one in the second on an RBI ground out off the bat of Chris Buitron, and then put up a four-spot in the third on four base hits, two walks and a Chap error.
In the fourth, LCU pitcher Lester Lugo entered the contest and walked the first three batters he faced to load the bases. Chinni recorded his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice line out, and Brian Allen brought home Calvin Bass on a single to right.
LCU closed it to 8-7 with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Colton Palmer and Bass each picked up an RBI in the fifth to extend the Wayland lead to 10-7. Buitron made it 11-8 in the sixth when he drove home Johnny Hendrixson with his first hit of the contest.
Tom Bailey relieved Downs in the fifth and held the home team to single runs in each of his first two innings of work. The sophomore right-hander, who picked up a complete game victory just three days ago against Southern Nazarene University, earned his sixth win of the season against the No. 18 Chaps. He allowed just four hits in five innings of relief, striking out six.
Allen went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Ben Christian and Oscar Rivera had two hits each. Chinni's double in the first was the only Pioneer extra base hit.
LCU outhit WBU 14-12, but Chaparral pitchers issued ten walks. Karl Seiter had three hits, including a double and a solo home run to lead the Chaps offensively.
The Pioneers (15-36, 6-21) wrap up their season on Thursday and Friday with a three-game series at No. 2 Oklahoma City.
