Box Score 2 ODESSA – It was marathon volleyball for Wayland Baptist here Tuesday night…and a bit bizarro, too.
After falling in five to a University of Texas-Permian Basin team that they had swept earlier in the season, the 18
th-ranked Pioneers defeated Angelo State, a team ranked No. 16 in NCAA Division II, in another five-set match.
"There was a lot of volleyball played this evening," WBU coach
Jim Giacomazzi said of the non-conference action hosted by UTPB.
Giacomazzi called the evening "a tale of two teams" for his club. The not-so-good Pioneers, after jumping up two spots in this week's NAIA poll, were tripped up by UTPB, 25-20, 21-25, 16-25, 25-23, 15-13; the much-better Pioneers then knocked off Angelo State, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 23-25, 16-14.
"The first team of Wayland showed up just flat" against UTPB, he said. "We weren't ready to play. We'd make a mistake and Permian would score a couple of points off our mistake. "We were slow in making adjustments…just a little bit off. We had too many hitting errors and not enough range or digging balls."
Wayland defeated UTPB (6-15) in three, 25-23, 25-16, 25-12, when they met in Plainview on Oct. 2.
Grecia Rivera had 20 digs as well as 20 kills in 61 swings and hit .213 for the Pioneers.
Mackenzie Clark added 13 kills and hit .379 while
Shahala Hawkins had 10 kills, while hitting .121, along with four solo blocks and seven block assists.
Natasha Giacomazzi recorded 32 assists and 10 digs while
Mercades Torres had 18 digs.
Thirty-five minutes after that match ended, the Pioneers lined up against Angelo State (13-6), which has been ranked as high as No. 7 in NCAA-DII. This time, Wayland pulled out the victory after going down to the wire.
"It was pretty intense," Coach Giacomazzi said.
He said the Pioneers "came up with key blocks and crucial times" in the fifth set, which saw Wayland jump out to a 5-1 lead. Angelo State tied it at 11, and it was tied at 14 before the Pioneers tacked on the final two points.
Clark's 16 kills led the team, followed by Hawkins' 14,
Claire Jacobsma's 13 and Rivera's 11. Hawkins again had a solid blocking match with 3 solos and six assists, while Jacobsma, who hit .379, had nine block assists and
Chelsey Driskill eight. Rivera led in digs with 20, followed by Torres with 18, while
Ashlyn Westerman pounded out 51 assists.
Wayland had 17 total blocks in each match.
"It seemed like we blocked well, but we could have had 50 blocks in both matches," Giacomazzi said, adding that the Pioneers were inconsistent in their technique.
Prior to Tuesday, Wayland had only played one five-set match all season – against No. 9 The Master's (Calif.) way back Sept. 6.
UTPB and Angelo State squared off in the third and final match of the evening. The Belles beat the host Falcons in four, 25-22, 25-13, 22-25, 25-22.
Wayland tips off the second half of Sooner Athletic Conference play by hosting Oklahoma City University at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by Mid-America Christian at 11 a.m. Saturday.
