Queens suffer heartbreak with another close loss

Christie Mooney led the Flying Queens with 11 points in Thursday's loss at John Brown.
Box Score SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. – After dropping two tight contests at home last week, the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens were looking to bounce back against Sooner Athletic Conference opponent John Brown University here Thursday night. Ultimately, the Queens suffered a major heartbreak, falling 49-40.

Wayland led for the majority of the low-scoring defensive battle until John Brown made some timely shots as the final minutes ticked off the clock.

Both squads struggled with their shooting in the first half, going 24 percent from the floor. Wayland (13-14, 5-8 SAC) was 0-of-6 from long range and John Brown (10-15, 5-8), traditionally a strong 3-point shooting team, was only 2-of-11. WBU's Christie Mooney led with six points as the teams headed to the locker room.

The Flying Queens were able to keep the Golden Eagles at arm's length throughout the second half, going up by as many as five until JBU tied it again at 32 with eight minutes left to play. Wayland took another four-point lead on a long bomb by Mooney, but four straight buckets from John Brown, including a 3-pointer, put the Golden Eagles up 43-38.

A 3-pointer from CeCe Williams pulled the Flying Queens within three, but the remainder of the team's shots didn't connect. JBU made a layup and subsequent free throws in the final half-minute to put the game away by nine points and shatter Wayland's hopes for a feel-good Valentine's Day win on the road.

Mooney led WBU with 11 points, followed by Williams with seven. LaTericka Anderson reeled in 10 rebounds, followed by Angeleigh Davis with seven. The team shot 15-of-53 from the floor, including 4-of-15 from long range and 6-of-9 from the charity stripe.

The Golden Eagles were led by Anna Parrish with 11 points, as the team improved their overall shooting percentage to 30 percent. JBU also made 14-of-17 from the free throw line.

The Flying Queens will try to snap their three-game losing skid as they square off against No. 12 Rogers State (20-6, 10-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday in Claremore, Okla.
