West Texas A&M pitchers silence Pioneer bats

Pioneer catcher Tyler Doolittle came up with the team's only hit in Wayland's 12-0 loss to West Texas A&M on Tuesday afternoon.
Box Score CANYON – The short drive to West Texas A&M's Wilder Park turned into a rocky road for the Wayland Baptist baseball team, as the Pioneers fell 12-0 here Tuesday afternoon.

The first three innings were fairly smooth for both pitchers as WBU's Logan Evans gave up just three hits and WTAMU's Scott Cone surrendered just one.

Wayland (8-18) struggled mightily in the fourth, however. West Texas A&M (15-8) led off the inning with three straight hits to load the bases and then pushed three runs across home plate after Evans gave up two more hits, ending his day.

The Buffs continued their offensive push as Paxton Bartley came in for the Pioneers. After allowing three more runs, Bartley finally put out the fire, but WTAMU headed back to the field with a comfortable 6-0 lead.

WTAMU scored another run in the fifth and five in the sixth to increase its lead to 12-0. The Pioneers went down quietly in the top of the seventh and the game ended in on the 10-run rule.

The Buffs' pitchers put on a show for the visiting Pioneers, allowing just a single base runner as WBU catcher Tyler Doolittle recorded an infield single in the third inning.

WTAMU now leads the series between the two schools, 31-27.

The Pioneers will look to get back in the win column as they host Mid-America Christian at 1 p.m. Friday at Wilder Field in a Sooner Athletic Conference doubleheader.
