Pioneers not pretty, but still get a win

Box Score

It wasn't pretty, but it was a win.

Juniors Katherine Teinert and Haley Reiser scored second-half goals to rally Wayland Baptist to a 2-1 win over the University of Texas-Permian Basin on Tuesday at Hilliard Field.

WBU coach Shiloh Posey said the Pioneers wouldn't get many style points for their latest win.

"It's a good thing the final score is all that matters," he said.

The win put Wayland back on track with the best start to a season in school history, matching the 2011 team's 5-2 start.

Posey said the Pioneers may have gotten away with learning a valuable lesson without paying for it with a loss.

"We need to realize that you have to be mentally prepared for every game," he said. "It's all about your mental approach. That determines everything."

The Falcons came to Plainview with an 0-4 record, and Posey said the Pioneers may have taken UTPB a bit too lightly.

"We came out too relaxed and were not very focused. We started flat," said Posey, adding that he noticed something wrong in pre-game warm-ups.

"We stopped and talked about it and tried to correct it."

But the Falcons scored the first goal of the game and led 1-0 at intermission, despite Wayland holding a 7-5 shot advantage.

Posey said the Pioneers had a lot of good scoring opportunities, but couldn't get one in.

"We'd hit the post or hit the goalkeeper's leg. We were just a step off."

The Pioneers were able to refocus a bit at halftime and it paid off. Sixty minutes in, Teinert tied it when she took a cross from Emarie Holland that got past the UTPB keeper and put it in the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Wayland got the game-winning goal 14½ minutes later when Reiser notched her second goal, getting the ball at the top of the box and putting it unassisted in the bottom left corner.

"I feel like we did better in the second half, but it still was not a pretty performance," said Posey, whose team outshot the Falcons in the second half, 8-1, for an overall 15-6 advantage. Wayland put eight shots on goal, including three by Reiser, compared to just two for UTPB.

While neither team scored the rest of the match, there was lots of action as five yellow cards were issued in the final minute.

"It got a little out of hand at the end," Posey said.

Posey said he was "proud of the way the girls kept their heads," but added they still must do a better job of staying out of situations.

"We have to keep the big picture and the team as a whole in mind," he said. "Little issues can not only hurt you, but they can hurt your team. If (UTPB) had gotten a free kick there, who knows what might have happened."

Tuesday's match marked the first time Wayland and UTPB have met since 2009 when the Falcons won, 4-0. Wayland now trails the all-time series, 6-4.

The Pioneers now hit the road for Weatherford, Okla., to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State at 3 p.m. Friday in Wayland's final non-conference match.

"We have one more big one Friday then we'll get a few days off to rest up our bumps and bruises," Posey said.

Sooner Athletic Conference action begins for Wayland on Sept. 27 at home against Mid-America Christian.
