Overtime goal sinks Pioneers

Box Score

The Wayland Baptist men's soccer team was looking to extend its winning streak to four games Saturday, but John Brown had other ideas. The Golden Eagles stole a victory away from WBU at J.V. Hilliard Field, winning in overtime, 2-1.

Wayland (9-5, 3-3) had its chances in the match, which included the overtime period. Jonathan Luna, who had just checked into the match, took a beautiful, high shot from about 35 yards that almost snuck over the top of the JBU goal keeper. John Brown's Adam Holt made a tremendous leaping save, however, to keep the Golden Eagles alive.

After a WBU corner kick and a long shot from Juan Sanchez, John Brown (6-6-1, 2-3-1) went on the attack.

Martin Gonzalez, a senior for the Golden Eagles, got a pass from about 40 yards out and beat a Wayland defender, creating a one-on-one situation with John-Ramses Thomas, the Pioneers' keeper.

Gonzalez, who led all players in shots attempted Saturday, took his seventh and final shot with four and a half minutes remaining. Gonzalez drilled a tough shot to the top-right corner of the goal, giving JBU a 2-1 win.

Not only did Gonzalez score the game-winning goal, but he had the assist in the game-tying goal as well.

Seven minutes into the second half, Gonzalez played a free shot from just outside the box right in front of Wayland's goal. JBU's Douglas Oliveira headed the ball in to tie the match, 1-1.

Wayland scored its only goal in the first half on a penalty kick from Renato Dos Anjos. The senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil took the shot after a foul was called on John Brown inside the box in the 26th minute.

The Golden Eagles outshot the Pioneers, 12 to nine, but both teams had four shots on goal.

Wayland returns to the pitch Oct. 21 when the Pioneers take on Texas Wesleyan (5-5-2, 3-2-0) at 7 p.m. in Fort Worth. The Pioneers' next home game will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 31 against Southwestern Christian (5-6-2, 1-4-0).
