Queens crack Top 25

Pioneers coach Matt Garnett & Bunja Yaboe; (on the home page) Queens coach Alesha Robertson.
For the first time in three years and only the second time in a decade, the Wayland Baptist Flying Queens are in the Top 25.

Fresh off their second win over a top-six team in eight days, the Flying Queens showed up at No. 24 in this week's NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll. The Queens (15-10, 12-4 Sooner Athletic Conference) were ranked the equivalent of 28th last week after being 31st both weeks before that.

The Queens knocked off No. 6 Oklahoma City University on Saturday, 88-77, a week after defeating then-No. 4 Oklahoma Baptist, 73-65. Despite losing, the Stars (17-3, 4-2) did not drop in this week's poll, while OBU (23-3, 15-2) went from fifth back to fourth. A fourth SAC team, John Brown (20-5, 12-4), also is ranked at No. 16.

The ranking is the first for Wayland since Feb. 15, 2010, when the Queens were No. 25. They were ranked as high as 18th that season. Before that, the Queens' last ranking came during the 2003-04 season.

In the men's poll, three SAC teams are ranked while a fourth is receiving votes. Wayland's Pioneers still aren't getting any love from pollsters, despite two impressive victories last week and wins over all four teams earning Top 25 votes.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University (22-3, 14-2), which was No. 1 when Wayland handed the Lions their second loss, moved from fifth to fourth. Mid-America Christian (14-8, 10-6) fell from 14th to 17th after three straight losses, including a 101-96 setback to Wayland. St. Gregory's (18-6, 9-6) went from 21st to 23rd after losing its last game to Texas Wesleyan, three games after falling to Wayland, 91-77. Oklahoma City (13-9, 9-6), which the Pioneers ran out of the gym on Saturday, 109-81, is the equivalent of 31st.

The Flying Queens and Pioneers are on the road this week, taking on Northwood in Cedar Hill on Thursday night and SAGU on Saturday afternoon. They return to Hutcherson Center to end the regular season against Science & Arts of Oklahoma on Feb. 27 and Texas Wesleyan on March 1.
